President’s Award for Outstanding Community Service

Dorothy Howell Huffey is a fourth generation Nevadan with a long history of philanthropic service. She is well-known for her continuous support of the not-profit sector in Nevada. Dorothy’s weekly column, “The R-J Goes to a Party,” in Nevada’s largest newspaper, the Las Vegas- Review Journal, highlights the achievements of volunteers and philanthropic supporters of community organizations. For 29 years, she has been the Society Columnist, covering more than 100 social events annually throughout Clark County. Her articles feature local charities’ fundraising events.

Dorothy has been front and center in our state for many years, providing leadership in many ways. In 1982, Dorothy co-chaired Governor Richard Bryan’s Inaugural Balls in Reno and Las Vegas. In 1992, she was the recipient of the University of Nevada, Reno President’s Medal, as well as being elected Sustainer of the Year by the Las Vegas Sustainers. In 1998, she was invited to join the Fraternity of Executive Chefs of Las Vegas for her work with the Chefs for Kids program. The Clark County Pro Bono Project awarded Dorothy the community’s Distinguished Service Award in 1999. In 2005, Dorothy was selected as one of “100 influential women who have shaped the first 100 years of Las Vegas.” In 2006, she was honored at the annual Chefs for Kids Gala for raising hundreds of thousands of dollars for the nutrition program’s 12 at-risk schools.

The President’s Award for Outstanding Community Service is a special award given occasionally by the AFP Chapter Las Vegas for an outstanding person who has made a very unique contribution to our community.
